As we head into the final race of the 2024 season, Roan Mountain, there are three Open Stand Up racers vyeing for the 2024 World Championship, with a possiblity of a three way tie! But WGSF doesn’t have a tie breaker listed in the rules. While WGSF will not normally change a rulebook midseason, this is one of the few cases that the rulebook needs to be updated.
The following rule will be added to the rule book.
8.3 Tie Breakers
End of season rankings will not use tie breakers for the final season rankings, except to quantify the top three positions. The following tie breakers will be used, using only the races that are used for a racers final total tally.
- Compare head to head results.
- If still tied, or undetermined, assign points based on qualifying position, tallied the same way as the series tally.
- If still tied, or undetermined, compare head to head qualifying positions.
- If still tied, or undetermined, compare head to head qualifying times with the winner having the largest delta.
To start with, in 2024 the results are based on the racers best two races. So only the two races that contribute to that result will be considered. Head to head results will compare two races, who beat whom, regardless of actual positions. If they only faced each other once, there is a clear winner. If they faced each other twice, it is possible a tie still exists. For 2024, if a three way tie happens, it could be undetermined.
The second tie breaker is to assign points to qualifying postions. So pole position would get 100 points. Tally up the two results from the two races used for the point tally (not necessarily their best two qualifying results) then compare these results. This takes into consideration more qualifying results.
Of course there can still be a tie, so move on to comparing qualfying positions based on head to head.
Finally, if still tied, or undetermined, look at the head to head results and select the one with the largest delta.
